60 second interview with Valerie Powick, Steward

1.  What do you believe is the Church's main challenge for 2003?

To  prove that it still has relevance by providing positive leadership on the subjects that matter to most people, not just trendy minority concerns,
though, obviously, they have their own importance in the scheme of things.
2.  We read that church attendance is dropping around the country.

Is this true of Great Witley? If so, what can be done to reverse the trend?

Great Witley is not my Parish Church, but churches in general need to be welcoming places in which to worship, and care must be taken not to "throw out the baby with the bath water".

In other words, don't be so anxious about attracting new people that the old ones are made to feel uncomfortable in what has been a way of life for them over many years, and so gradually drift away.

3.  How do you think that our visitors and parishoners can help to support all that Great Witley Church stands for?

The parishioners must show visitors that it is a living, working church, not a museum, and the visitors need to feel this, so that it caters for all - those who are churchgoers of whatever denomination, and those who just appreciate the beauty of their surroundings, but maybe imbibe something of the living church through osmosis!

4.  What is your biggest "wish" for Great Witley Church in the future?

As a steward, to double our visitor numbers
and also double our stewards!

Britain's finest Baroque Church.  St. Michael and All Angels Church, Great Witley,  A443 Worcester - Tenbury Wells road, 10 miles north-west of Worcester.    As the parish church for the villages of Great Witley and Little Witley  it is used regularly for services and concerts. The church is open to visitors daily. The church, now almost fully restored, displays a splendour which is unique amongst country churches in Britain, with exquisite gilded decorations throughout, numerous paintings by Antonio Bellucci, ten painted glass windows depicting scenes from the New Testament, highly decorative carving and a large monument by Rysbrack. It also has a fine organ, its case being from the instrument on which Handel played.   Many musicians consider its acoustics for music to be as fine as any building of its size outside London
